Running shoes have a product lifespan. To enjoy your running, we recommend replacing your running shoes when they have reached the end of their life. You need good shoes to run well and feel good. Here are some tips on when it is time to replace your shoes, and how to wear them so they last longer.

How long should a shoe last?

Many things can impact it, but you'll be able to cover a lot of distance in your Mizuno running shoes. Mizuno running shoes have a renowned durability, and you can expect to run approximately 600km in them.

Each Mizuno running shoe is designed for a specific purpose. As a result, we construct each shoe with a unique design and materials that will change its longevity. Additionally, every runner has a unique gait and build which will change how long a shoe will last.

Using a running shoe outside of it's specified purpose can have a big impact on it's durability. This is why we only warrant running shoes for the sport of running. If you use your shoe for something other than running, it's being used in ways it wasn't meant for. This means that the shoe will not last long at all.

A good example of this is using a running shoe for a gym workout. Moving sideways and sliding your shoes on the ground in a workout can make them wear out quicker than running long distances. This is why we have a specific training collection that can withstand these forces.

Bigger runners wear out the shoe's midsole faster than smaller runners. Runners who land on their heels wear out the rearfoot faster than those who land on their forefoot. These are just a couple of examples of how runner build and gait will affect the durability of the shoe.

But 600kms (or 300 - 400 miles) is about the max for most runners. Some runners run more, but the foam in the middle of the shoe eventually loses its ability to c

Wear and tear of the heel area

Did you know?: Shoes can deteriorate in 3 to 4 years, even if you haven't used them. Plus, running shoes with worn out soles may lead to injury.

When the soles of running shoes become worn out, they get thinner. When you get new shoes, flip them over and take a picture of how thick the bottom is with your phone. When you think the soles have become worn, compare the thickness with the original photo. Decreased sole thickness is a sign that the soles have become worn out.

Although a pair of running shoes can last around 600kms, the foam in shoes can deteriorate after three or four years. That is even if you don’t wear them much. Old shoes can fall apart and cause injury when you run. So you should get new shoes if you have not used them for a long time. Regardless of the distance you have run in them, and how often you have used them.

Moreover, running in shoes with heel wear and tear that is uneven can negatively affect your running form. Wearing old shoes with bad soles for a long time can make new shoes feel uncomfortable when running. If your soles wear out unevenly or show excessive wear, you might need new well fitting shoes.

How can I make my shoes last longer?

Tip: Loosen all the shoelaces before putting on your shoes and avoid tightening or loosening them too much.

To make your shoes last longer, it is important to put them on in the proper way. Some people put on their running shoes without loosening or undoing the laces by using a shoehorn or other method. But this is not the correct way to put on your shoes.

You should always loosen the laces of running shoes down to the lowest hole before putting your foot in the shoe.

First, eliminate any space between the heel and the shoe to make room for your toes. Then, tighten the laces one hole at a time, starting with the laces nearest the toes. How tight you make it will depend on how swollen your feet are that day. The key is to never make the laces too tight or too loose.

Also, when tying the laces in a bow, you should consciously tie them with about the strength of a handshake. While running, the force exerted on your feet is about six times your body weight. To ensure that your shoes perform to their full potential, it’s important to put them on in the proper way.
